Delegates were welcomed into the Legends Lounge for the first time at June's breakfast meet, as the morning was enjoyed networking over views of the city and the iconic Kia Oval outfield.
Members and guests enjoyed a morning of networking, a delicious continental breakfast, heard about upcoming projects and offers from members, as well as this month's guest speaker, Jon Surtees.
As well as Head of Communications for Surrey Cricket, Jon has recently published 'Wisden of The Oval', documenting the incredible history of the ground and gave a fascinating talk about the book, including snippets of the most iconic moments. Delegates were fascinated to hear stories of the Oval hosting the first ever test match, as well as the first international football game for England when they took on Scotland.
Jon went onto explain how cricket's most prestigious competition - The Ashes - started at the Oval in 1882, and that during World War II the British government used the Oval as a prisoner of war camp. Interestingly, the owners of the Oval only allowed this on one condition - the cricket square could not be damaged to ensure the preservation of the pitches!
Jon only touched on a small amount of history of the ground, however, Wisden at the Oval is out now at all good book shops or available for purchase here.
